The White Grass 5k

Jim Wittenschlager

Jim Wittenschlaeger leads the White Grass 5k Snowshoe Race. Jim would go on to win the event

This past weekend I headed out to West Virginia’s Canaan Valley by the gracious invitation of a friend to go Skiing with my daughter. The second day of our outing found as at the White Grass Cross Touring Center – a really cool Cross Country and Snow Show facility in the Valley.

By chance we got to see a group of 20 or so people brave the cold (albeit nice day) to participate in the annual White Grass 5k Snowshoe Race.

I managed to snap a few images from the event, including the one here of winner Jim Wittenschlaeger, who despte the mid 20s temperature ran the event in flimsy running shorts.

Dan Lehmann of the West Virginia Trail Runners posted a short race report on his organization’s blog.

Laurel Hill HDRs

Lorton HDR 750

One of the several HDR images I shot at Laurel Hill in Lorton Virginia this past weekend

One of my New Year’s resolutions (along with the usual other ones) was to pull the camera out and shoot more pictures, as many as possible. Mostly because I want to improve my craft and because I simply love seeing what I can do with the camera lens.

In addition to starting to play with light and light sources I have also been experimenting with High Dynamic Range (HDR) Images. The main purpose of HDR images is to make high-bit images that retain light and shadow detail better than a single exposure can. Basically an HDR image is a combination of several images shot at different exposure levels to capture as much of the light and shadow range in a specific scene. Wikipedia does a good job of laying it all out for you, so I won;t go into much more detail than that in here, instead, here’s some images I recently shot while riding the trails of Laurel Hill in Lorton Virginia.

Toned Junk

An HDR of trailside Junk

An HDR of trailside Junk

Here’s another pic from my new year’s ride at Laurel Hill. Actually it’s an HDR (combination of 5 exposures) of some junk on the side of the dairy trail loop over at Laurel Hill in Lorton Virginia. I should have a few more HDRs coming up soon, including other angles of this same scene…

Here’s a few more HDRs if you’re interested.

Ariana, Year 4

Ariana plays for the camera

one of the many pictures that made it into the 2008 edition of Ariana’s book…

Every year for the past 4, around this time, I sit down at my computer and go through all of the pictures I took of my daughter, Ariana, and put together an iPhoto book that documents her growth.

I do it mostly for her so that as she grows up she has a visual record of her experiences. I also do it because it is a wonderful gift for both grandmas – they lov it.

If you’re interested, here is the 2008 edition of Ariana’s Book (22.5 MB pdf).

Machu Picchu: Found

Machu Picchu HDR

Machu Picchu HDR. Photo: Martin Fernandez

Came across this interesting article on one of the seven wonders of the world, Machu Picchu; It seems that Mr. Bingham wasn’t the first to “find” it after the Incas lost it. You decide.

But, if you haven’t “found” Machu Picchu let me know – I’m planning a trip for 2009 and would love to have you come along.

For inspiration and check out some of my pictures from last year’s trip to the belly button of the world…
